To the people that contacted me via my online contact form to tell me that “rape is never funny”, because of this post…

I think the issue stems from the prevalence of rape. One in five women are raped, or will be raped in their lifetime.

Many rapes go unreported. Many women find their lives completely dissected when they do report. This is a culture that does not take rape nearly as seriously as it should. That is why we bristle at rape jokes.

Thanks for the thoughtful input instead of the simple blanket statement and unfollow.

I think dying is worse that being raped. And you know how many people die? Five out of five. There happen to be more than just a few jokes about death.

You raise an excellent point though about women and men that have faced trauma and how such jokes might affect them. I will consider that in the future and I promise to not become a clearing house for rape jokes.

I somewhat disagree about society not taking rape of women seriously enough. I see the issue covered pretty well. (I would agree that society doesn’t take rape of men seriously enough.)

Anyway, we’ll see how many people can’t take a little controversy and hit that unfollow button in a flash. To those people I say, good riddance. See ya never.

A few things:

When you die, even traumatically, you don’t have to then live with…having died. It’s not a good argument.

Also, if rape continues to be such a prevalent occurrence, it obviously isn’t being addressed effectively. It doesn’t matter if you, on an anecdotal level, think that it’s “covered”. Raping someone is a choice. It’s not just psychopaths. Defending insensitivity to such a devastating issue is insupportable. I haven’t encountered a rape joke that’s funny enough to defend making it. Maybe one exists. But here’s a radical thought: maybe you should avoid being extremely disrespectful for the sake of a punchline.
